Join us for an urban exploration of Tempe’s cultural corridor, with a focus on Minimalist photography. We will also visit two galleries. By isolating simple lines, geometric shapes, and negative space, we will capture the "less is more" aesthetic found in modern architecture and contemporary art. This is a leader-guided event for up to 12 participants, designed to explore beauty in simplicity and street photography.
Our Itinerary: We will meet at 7:45 AM in the parking lot off Remington and Canyon Drive, depart at 8:00 AM, and plan to return in mid-afternoon. Our destination is the visitor parking area at ASU Art Museum in Tempe.
We will follow a curated walking route:
9:00 AM – 10:15 AM: ASU Art Museum & Nelson Fine Arts Center – Free; we will photograph the exterior and not visit the interior.
Start: 51 E 10th St.
· Activity: We will start with the exterior of the Nelson Fine Arts Center. Its brutalist, geometric architecture is an ideal subject for minimalist compositions. We can use the morning light to capture the harsh shadows and bold angles of the structure. Begin with an outdoor shoot of the building’s famous "magic mountain" architecture.
· Walking: Head north on Mill Avenue (approx. 5-7 mins).
10:15 AM – 11:30 AM: Satellite Gallery (at the Historic Post Office) – Free opens at 8:30 am
· Location: 500 S Mill Ave.
· Activity: Explore the intimate gallery space inside this historic building. This stop offers a minimalist contrast between vintage old postal architecture structural details and modern art displays. It offers excellent "sense of place" shots.
· Lunch at Daily Jam, Mill Ave. & W. 3rd St.
· After lunch walking: Continue north on Mill Avenue toward the lake (approx. 10-12 mins).
1:30 PM – 2:30 PM: Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA) Gallery – Free opens at 10 am
· Location: 700 W Rio Salado Pkwy.
- Activity: Finish at the TCA. The gallery features high-end contemporary work, while the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the infinity pool and Tempe Town Lake offer opportunities to photograph the building's clean lines against the expansive, simple horizon. Perfect for landscape and reflection photography.
