Workshops

The following educational programs are offered for members to develop their skills in photography and image processing.  Most courses are taught by volunteer club members who give their time and talents freely. They prepare for their instruction periods so that you may benefit from them. Some classes are presented in a sequence of parts. To gain the maximum benefit from the instruction, workshop participants should make an effort to follow through and attend each class session as it is scheduled.

This season we ask that you register for workshops you plan to attend. This will allow instructors to adequately prepare workshop materials and available workshop space. PLEASE NOTE: Workshops will be available for registration on the first day of the month preceding the scheduled event date. Prior to the registration opening date, a note in the left hand margin will have the message "Registration is Closed". It does not mean that the event is "Full".

To register you will need to be logged into the Grand Photos membership site and then scroll to the class and click on the register button below the workshop title.  Most workshops are free; when there is a fee as part of the registration process, you may pay online using PayPal or a credit card, or you may print out the invoice and take a copy of the invoice along with your payment to the studio and leave it with the monitor.

    Creative Editing Techniques:

A series of monthly sessions. If you would like to try new creative ways to interpret your photos, this course is for you. The course is about making photos more “artistic” or “impressionistic” using the editing tools in Photoshop, Affinity Photo, Topaz plug-ins and the new Topaz Studio and other apps that use layers.

The  session topics are as follows:

    • October will include a short slide show of images created using these techniques as well as a YouTube video on the basics of layers.
    • November- Texturizing  and creating images using a technique  called “Line and Reveal”.
    • December- Using Topaz Simplify with one of my favorite workflows.
    • January - Creating “watercolor”  and other “painterly”  images using Topaz Simplify.
    • February -Using textures in a variety  of ways.
    • March - Frames, borders and edges.
    • April and May - These sessions are freeform, responding to needs, wants and new ideas from members.

While digital art is the objective learning more about the use of layers and other editing tools will be useful for “normal” editing as well. There’s a lot to learn and it’s a lot of fun!

In this session I’ll do an introduction that will include a short slide show of some of the images I’ve created using the techniques that I’ll be demonstrating . I’ll show a YouTube video on the basics of layers to build a foundation for the creative techniques.

Adobe Lightroom is a solution photographers use for managing, optimizing, and sharing their photos. This 3–session workshop will provide basic understanding of this very popular editing program. The Lightroom program contains seven (7) separate modules.

Session 1 will deal with the “Library” module and how to use features of the program to import images, catalog, manage image names and files, methods for rating and filtering images by using key words or flags and how to set up collections or “albums” of images.

Session 2 is devoted to the “Develop” module that includes tools to correct or modify exposure, contrast, and shadows. Other tools used in this session will include cropping/leveling, enhancement effects, camera calibration, lens correction, and detail modifications.

Session 3 will highlight features of the printing module, use of the map, photo-book, slide show and web modules.

What is sharpening and how does it work? What do the different sharpening controls like radius, detail, masking do? What about noise reduction – how does that interact with sharpening? How should images be sharpened for best creative impact? These questions will be addressed using the e-book “The Photographers Guide to Image Sharpening in Lightroom” by Robin Whalley and accompanying videos. While the workshop is Lightroom oriented, the principles – and in many cases the tools – are applicable to all photo editing software.
